Barnes Jawn: Shani Akilah
See Event Description
Join us for an evening tour full of make-believe as we play fast and loose with everything you thought you knew about the Barnes. In Philadelphia, jawn is catch-all word for anything. A Barnes Jawn(t) is an anything-goes tour of the collection with a fascinating Philly personality as your guide. These off-the-cuff, sure-to-run-off-the-rails tours are led by a diverse array of community leaders, artists, and comic-book nerds—all experts in their fields. Shani Akilah is a liberationist who believes in digging until the root of what prevents us from walking in our full humanity is located and removed. In 2017 Shani cofounded the Black and Brown Workers Collective as a worker-owned and -run cooperative; its mission stands at the intersection of the Workers Rights and the Black Lives Matter movements. Shani sees these two movements as inextricably connected as the lives of black and brown workers and community members are valued differently in our raced and classed system.
