Poi E: The Story of Our Song
See Event Description
In this upbeat documentary featuring archival VHS footage, Poi E (Tearepa Kahi, 2016, runtime 1:30) follows the extremely unlikely trajectory of a hit song and music video from the 1980s in New Zealand, starring Dalvanius Prime. With the help of his mentor, Māori language expert Ngoingoi Pēwhairangi, and the Patea Social Club, the song and video reignited Maori pride among the young. The feature length version of the film receives its area premiere during this program. Hosted by University of Pennsylvania New Zealanders: Orchid Tierney, Penn English/Cinema Studies, and Alexis Rider, Penn History/Sociology of Science, with surprise guests. Part of Penn Museum's Second Sunday Culture Films Series. Sponsored by Penn Cinema Studies and The Wolf Humanities Center. Free with Museum admission.
